Challenges in introducing high-density interconnect technology in printed circuit boards for space applications

Despite its introduction over 3 decades ago, designing, manufacturing and testing of high-density interconnect (HDI) printed circuit boards (PCBs) remains a topic discussion. A plethora advanced processes is used to realize HDI PCBs in general microvias particular. The technology for space applications the pursuit qualification by European Space Agency create need critical review existing test methods. Two categories are considered: two levels staggered (basic HDI) three semi-stacked (complex HDI). Several challenges were encountered during design, evaluation basic technology. main issues related positioning with respect core via, interconnection stress (IST) coupon microvia failures via performance.
